What is firmware?
Firmware is software that is built into hardware. This software ensures that the hardware functions properly. The software is crucial to the functionality of the device.
Firmware is found in TVs, washing machines, Internet of Things (IoT) devices and routers, among others. PCs are also equipped with firmware. Different "types" of firmware, such as BIOS or UEFI, reside on the PC's motherboard. For these more complex devices (such as PCs), firmware contains only the basic function of a device. It communicates with higher-level software used by consumers. Firmware acts as the complete operating system for less complex devices, including IoT devices.
Firmware updates
An update of firmware is crucial for the device to function properly. When changes are made to the software, in response to new features for the end user, a device must be able to download it.
Supplier regularly make firmware updates available. This can be done, for example, to fix programming errors ("bugs") or add additional functionality. Among other things, a firmware update for a router can improve network performance.
The need for these updates
As we mentioned above, firmware updates are necessary. The main reason for this is cybersecurity. Firmware, like any other software, can be vulnerable and thus pose a cyber risk. For example, hackers can gain access to firmware by bypassing traditional security. This can allow these hackers to gain access rights and take full control of the system. Thus, a solid firmware update process should be a key pillar of any cybersecurity strategy.
